Having trouble getting through your to do list? Are you struggling to find the right motivation and drive to knock it out?
Well in this post, and the accompanying video, I’m going to share a powerful tool you can use to do the things on your to-do list better and in less time.
Its called a to-be list.
And it can radically improve both your performance and your results.
Why?
Because being informs doing.
Paying attention to the mindset with which you approach your to-do list is vital to realizing more success.
Most of the time, we don’t even think about cultivating a success mindset before we start doing something. We just start doing it.
When you just start doing something without first giving some thought to the way you want to do it, you leave a lot on the table in terms of performance and results.
But when you take the time to cultivate a successful mindset, or state of being, before you start doing something, you’ll amaze yourself at just how much better you perform.
Here’s the video:

There are two primary ways a to-be list can help you improve your performance and your results.
- A to-be list helps you focus on the qualities, characteristics, and attributes you need to embody to succeed. What you focus on expands. And what you think about you bring about. The act of writing down the qualities of success, and then focusing on embodying them will cause you to act in a successful ways.
- A to-be list can help you realize more effective ways of doing things. When you decide to be something, you give your creative subconscious mind a problem to solve. It will start to look at all of your current and future actions through the lens of your desired outcome. It will then deliver messages to your conscious mind to help guide you to that outcome. If something you’re doing, or thinking of doing, isn’t in alignment with the outcome you want, you’ll become aware of it.
The underlying principle behind a to-be list, is this:
When you change your mindset, you change your performance. When you change your performance, you change your results.
The great thing about a to-be list is that you can dial it in and be as specific or as general as you like.
For example, if you want to get specific, you could write things like this on your list:
- top salesman in your company for the 4th quarter.
- mvp of your team
- national football champion
- world-class pianist
You simply tailor your list to support the specific goals you’ve set for yourself.
Just like writing your goals down, the physical act of putting pen to paper and making a to-be list starts your creative mind working on ways to help you make these things a reality.
You’ll most likely start coming up with ideas right away. From there you just have to execute them.
Your to-be list can also be less specific.
In which case, you simply write down some of the qualities, characteristics, and attributes that successful people embody. Like these:
- Bold
- Determined
- Persistent
- Driven
- Tenacious
- Decisive
- Effective
It’s your list. You can use it however you prefer.
You may even want to make two lists; one that’s very specific, and one that’s very general.
Whatever you decide, just remember, you write the script for your life. You get to decide what you will be. You can even decide to embody vastly different qualities, characteristics, and attributes than you have in the past. If this is the case, then I congratulate you! This is a sign you are growing. And that’s what life is all about.
All the best,
Mark
