If you’ve listened to the podcast or followed me on social media for very long, you know I’m a huge proponent of making changes to our self-image as the first step to realizing changes in our experience.
Why?
Because, “When [we] change, everything will change for [us].” ~ Jim Rohn
I often say there’s only one variable in the game of life, and that’s us!
This is great news because it gives us 100% control over our circumstances and allows us to change fast, if we want to.
In this episode I share some important ideas that you, as a parent, should teach your child about their self-image.
When you teach these concepts to your child at a young age they’ll have a lot of time to practice them.
In fact, I’ve even called this the greatest gift you can give a child.
They’ll be able to create so much more happiness and success for themselves in life because they’ll be working with the root cause of the experiences they encounter…their state of being.
Before we get into the specifics, let’s talk about why it’s so important to begin with our self-image if we want to affect real and lasting change in our lives.
It’s important because…
We can only act in ways that are consistent with the way we see ourselves.
Sure, we can force ourselves to do something once or twice.
But, to really show up every day in a consistent way, it’s so much more effective to put our efforts into changing the way we see ourselves.
When we develop a new self-image, one that is aligned with the experiences we want, and we impress it upon our consciousness, we will naturally start to express ourselves in ways that are consistent with this new image.
It’s import to constantly remind your child that the light that shines through them will illuminate any picture they hold of themselves in their mind’s eye, so make sure they hold the highest, noblest, most successful picture they can conjure!
5 things you should teach your child about their self-image:
- Their self-image will govern everything they’ll ever do or have in life: If we want to change our behaviors and act in ways that support the conditions we want in life, we can certainly force ourselves to do it using will power. However, this approach takes an enormous amount of physical and emotional energy. Because, we’re working against ourselves. We’re trying to paddle up-stream so-to-speak. The more intelligent way is to change the central program we’re running and the ideas we have about ourselves in a gentle gradual way and then let ourselves be pulled and inspired to do things that are consistent with that new self-concept.
- They have the final say…they get to decide who and what they’ll be: This might be a tough one for you, as a parent to swallow, but just hear me out. Everyone comes into this world with an agenda that only they can truly understand and carry out. No one can walk the path for us. Even though your child came into the world through you, they didn’t come to you. Kahlil Gibran wrote about this. It’s important to remind them that they have the power to design their self-image using their imagination, and while they should certainly take your guidance, they have the final say.
- Their guide is inside: Teach them that their true guide is within them. It’s the little voice that is forever whispering to them about what they should be and do to carry out their mission here on earth. No one ever created anything great by conforming to the opinions of other people, and no one ever will. Every innovator has turned within and connected with their authentic self first and then expressed that to the world. So, help them get to know themselves and tune in to what their intuition is telling them to do. Remind them that there’s something within them that wants to come out. Help them nurture and express it in a way that serves others. Their innate gifts, talents, and inclinations are their gold mine. When tapped and mined, they will become an infinite source of happiness, satisfaction, prosperity, and bliss.
- Create and use focusing tools, exercises, and practices on a daily basis: There are a lot of ways to harness and focus the creative power within us. It can be as simple as taking a few minutes before each day to think of themselves being the person they want to be and setting a positive intention to show up in a deliberate way. Another effective focusing tool is a Being Board. A being board is a visual representation of the qualities, characteristics, and attributes they’ll need to embody to cause the experiences they want to have in life. You can make this a family activity and make one for yourself too. Being boards are fun to make and very rewarding. And, they’ll help you create real change in your life.
- They have to renew their self-image every day, and they’re never done: Just like we need to renew our bodies through exercise and eating, we also have to renew our self-image through daily inner work. Everything in The Universe cycles from creation to destruction. If we don’t focus on our ideal self every day we’ll forget and we’ll get off track. By developing our self-image on a daily basis and constantly re-working and refining it we realize more and more success in life.
